New Delhi: The Indian Navy has a new second-in-command. On May 29, 2026, Vice Admiral Ajay Kochhar assumed charge as the 48th Vice Chief of the Naval Staff (VCNS), capping a distinguished career of over 37 years.
His first act in office was a solemn tribute laying a wreath at the National War Memorial in New Delhi to honor fallen heroes.
An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Kochhar was commissioned in 1988 and specialized in Gunnery and Missile Systems. His command record includes INS Nashak, Vibhuti, Kirpan, and the frigate Trikand. He later commanded the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya, overseeing the integration of its air wing.
A graduate of premier institutions including the Defence Services Staff College, Naval War College, and the Royal College of Defence Studies (UK), Kochhar has held key policy roles at Naval Headquarters. Promoted to Flag Rank in 2018, he steered carrier projects, warship production, and later commanded the Western Fleet. His tenure as Commandant of the NDA and Commander-in-Chief of the Andaman and Nicobar Command further underscored his leadership.
Decorated with the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (2022) and Param Vishisht Seva Medal (2026), Kochhar now steps into one of the Navy's most critical roles at a time of evolving maritime challenges.
