New Delhi: The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has knocked on the doors of the Supreme Court, challenging the Delhi High Court's order that allowed star wrestler Vinesh Phogat to compete in the upcoming selection trials for the Asian Games 2026.
The plea will be heard on Friday by a bench of Justices PS Narasimha and Alok Aradhe.
On May 22, a division bench of the Delhi High Court cleared Phogat's participation, observing that the WFI's selection policy was "exclusionary" as it lacked discretion to accommodate iconic athletes returning from maternity breaks. The court emphasized that such players deserved fair consideration.
The High Court also directed that the May 30-31 trials be video-recorded, with independent observers from the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) present to ensure transparency.
The Supreme Court's decision will now determine whether Phogat, one of India's most celebrated wrestlers, can continue her bid for the Asian Games, setting the stage for a high-stakes legal battle in Indian sports administration.
