Late by 10 Minutes, 15-Year-Old Patna Girl Barred From Exam, Takes Own Life on Moving Train

Late by 10 Minutes, 15-Year-Old Patna Girl Barred From Exam, Takes Own Life on Moving Train

Parentune 3 months ago

In a tragic incident in Bihar, a 15-year-old schoolgirl took her life after she was denied entry to her Class 10 board examination for arriving just 10 minutes late.

The shocking case has raised discussions about the immense pressure on students and strict exam regulations.

Who Was She?

The student has been identified as Komal Kumari, daughter of daily wage labourer Mantu Yadav, from Kharjama village in the Masaurhi area of Patna district. She was the eldest of three siblings, with two younger brothers, and had travelled to her exam centre to appear for one of the most important papers of her academic life.

What Happened on Exam Day?

On Tuesday, February 17, 2026, Komal set out for her Class 10 board examination at the Barni High School centre in Dhanrua, about six kilometres from her relative’s home in Maharajchak. Official reporting time for the exam was 9 AM, with the paper scheduled to start at 9:30 AM.

However, Komal reached the centre at around 9:10 AM, only to find the gates already locked. She reportedly pleaded with the exam staff, saying the tests had not yet commenced and she was barely late. “It’s crucial for my career,” she told them, highlighting how deeply important the exam was to her future. Despite her appeals, she was refused entry due to her late arrival.

Distressed and disheartened, she returned home, visibly upset. Later in the day, she left the house again and boarded a train at Nadaul station. Between Taregna and Masaurhi Court stations, Komal jumped off the moving train in an apparent suicide attempt, critically injuring herself. She was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival.

The Impact

Her parents, who work as daily wage labourers outside their village, came to know about her death after local officials shared her photo on social media and villagers identified her.

The incident has deeply affected the entire area. It has also raised serious questions about strict exam rules and how they impact young students, especially those from poor families. Many people say that students often travel long distances and depend on public transport, which can easily cause delays. But strict timing rules do not leave any space for understanding or flexibility.

Questions Around Examination Rules

After this incident, many people started questioning whether it is fair to close exam centre gates exactly at the reporting time, even when the exam actually begins later. Some people feel that following the rules so strictly, without thinking about travel problems or financial difficulties, can unfairly hurt students who have worked hard for years.

Some members of the Bihar Legislative Council have also spoken about this matter. They have asked officials to think about kinder and more practical rules — such as allowing students to enter if they are late due to genuine reasons, or giving them exam centres that are closer to their homes.

Looking Beyond the Tragedy

Komal’s story shows the heavy pressure many teenagers face today. They are not only expected to do well but to succeed without making even a small mistake. For families with limited income, education is seen as the only way to build a better future. So missing one exam can feel like losing everything.

Even though education policies keep changing over time, incidents like this remind us that strict systems can have serious human consequences.

As people mourn Komal’s death, many are asking for fairer exam rules, better emotional support for students, and more open discussions about mental health among young learners.
