IN the last week of October 1945, Zaildar Budh Khan Ghumman arrived at the house of my grandfather, Lambardar Lachhman Singh, early in the morning.

His income was modest compared with his expenses, and he wished to organise his daughters&apos; weddings in grand style. By early 1947, the creation of Pakistan seemed imminent. Sargodha remained relatively peaceful, and Sikhs and Muslims continued to live as friends. Budh repeatedly assured Lachhman, &quot;If you ever feel threatened, I will take you and your family to safety.&quot; As communal violence spread across the region, the situation changed rapidly. After Partition was announced, Sikh families began leaving western Punjab, while Muslims moved in the opposite direction. Despite having little idea where they would settle, Lachhman&apos;s family secretly prepared to leave. One day, he told Budh to take his mares, buffaloes, oxen, furniture, cots and other belongings because he could not carry them with him. Budh covered Lachhman&apos;s mouth with his hand and burst into tears. Both friends embraced, overwhelmed by the prospect of separation. The following morning, when Lachhman&apos;s family was set to depart, Budh arrived with three nephews, all mounted and armed. He declared, &quot;We will leave only after we have escorted you to the caravan. Even if we die protecting you, we will go to heaven. It is a profitable bargain for us.&quot; They accompanied the family through the tense countryside, carefully guarding their bullock cart. Finally, they reached the refugee caravan. Lachhman put his family members and their few belongings onto a truck. As the truck was about to leave, Budh embraced him and again broke down. Lachhman tried to console him: &quot;We will meet again. We are only going to different parts of the same land. When things settle down, I will come back to meet you.&quot; The truck began moving. Lachhman stood at the back, watching his lifelong friend disappear into the distance. Fate had other plans. Despite their deep friendship, sacrifices and promises, Lachhman and Budh never met after Partition. JAAC announced a grand &quot;Yakjehti Karwan&quot; (solidarity caravan) on August 19 to protest against the food crisis created by the Pakistani authorities.After a brief lull, protest rallies erupted again in several parts of PoK on Thursday. According to local residents of Rawalakot city, light firing began around 5 PM and till later evening continuous sounds of firing from heavy weapons were heard. &quot;The government and Pakistani paramilitary forces massacred the Kashmiri people for peacefully protesting for their rights and intend to commit further genocide. Pakistani paramilitary forces and police have looted and vandalized the shops of traders and the houses of the public. Therefore, JAAC has decided to announce a boycott of all bills, electricity, water, gas etc. and income tax from the month of August. All traders are appealed not to submit income tax returns this year,&quot; the declaration said. Giving relief to people after prolong lockdowns in the PoK, the JAAC asked traders to open shops two days a week, on Friday and Tuesday from 2 pm till evening prayer. Medical stores can open longer. Traders and transporters were asked to otherwise keep their shops in the markets closed. JAAC had on August 10 said it will issue a declaration on August 13, the day of UN resolution on Kashmir in 1948. In its declaration issued on Thursday the JAAC termed the recent assembly elections in PoK a sham which needs to be declared null and void and an interim government with an independent Election Commission be formed to conduct elections in free and fair atmosphere with wider public participation. The JAAC reiterated its demand for an inquiry commission comprising international human rights organizations to investigate the violations such as murder, torture, terrorism and forced disappearances committed by the government of Pakistan against the movement&apos;s leaders. &quot;JAAC strongly demands that the United Nations hold accountable those responsible for trying to crush the peaceful public rights movement through the use of arms and ammunition against its leaders and workers, and determine responsibility for the resulting human and financial losses suffered by the people,&quot; the declaration said. The JAAC also condemned the use of small arms and light weapons by Pakistani forces on the unarmed Kashmiris in PoK without provocation.
