The government is planning to bring social security schemes for gig workers as their numbers are expected to increase in the coming years.
At present, India has around 1 crore gig workers, including those working in food delivery and ride services. This number may rise to about 2.5 crore by the end of the decade.
Officials said all platforms have been asked to update worker details on the e-Shram portal by June 22. This will help the government provide benefits to workers.
The government is also working on schemes like accident insurance and maternity support for gig workers.
A special board is being set up to look after the welfare of these workers. Officials said the focus is to make sure workers get proper support and benefits.
International Labour Organisation (ILO) officials noted that gig work has become an important part of India’s economy, offering flexible job opportunities and income for many people. However, they also stressed that the proper implementation of social security schemes will be key.
