A tragic fire inside the trauma intensive care unit of SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, Odisha, early Monday morning has left ten patients dead and several others injured, triggering panic inside one of the state's busiest government hospitals.
According to the report, the blaze erupted in the hospital’s Trauma Care ICU during the early hours, when many critically ill patients were receiving treatment. The fire was reported sometime between 2:30 am and 3:00 am, prompting an immediate emergency response. Firefighters rushed to the scene with multiple fire tenders as hospital authorities scrambled to evacuate patients trapped inside the unit.
During the chaotic rescue effort, hospital staff and emergency personnel worked to move patients out of the smoke-filled ward. Several healthcare workers reportedly suffered burn injuries and smoke inhalation while assisting in the evacuation. At least eleven members of the hospital staff were injured during the operation and are now undergoing treatment.
The report confirmed that a total of 23 patients were swiftly relocated to other wards and intensive care units in different sections of the hospital to prevent further casualties. Despite the rapid response, several patients who were already in critical condition could not survive the ordeal.
Odisha Chief MinisterMohan Charan Majhi expressed profound sorrow over the loss of lives. He later visited the hospital to assess the situation and interact with officials overseeing the rescue and medical response.
The report said Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi revealed that seven patients lost their lives while being shifted from the affected ICU to other treatment units, while three more succumbed later during medical care, taking the total death toll to ten.
In response to the tragedy, Majhi ordered a judicial probe to determine the cause of the fire and examine whether any lapses in safety protocols contributed to the disaster. He also instructed authorities to ensure that all patients displaced by the incident are safely accommodated in other wards so their treatment can continue without interruption.
The state government has announced financial assistance for the families of the deceased. The Chief Minister, Majhi, declared an ex-gratia payment of Rs 25 lakh for the next of kin of each victim from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
During his visit, CM Majhi also met injured staff members and patients undergoing treatment. He assured families that the government would extend every possible support to those affected and directed the health department to provide the best available medical care.
