In a development within the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), senior leader and former Dibrugarh Assembly candidate Mainak Patra has stepped down from the party, resigning from both his primary membership and his role as central vice-president.
Patra submitted his resignation to AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi on May 30, stating personal reasons behind his decision. In his letter, he mentioned that he would be relinquishing all responsibilities with immediate effect and would no longer be involved in any party-related activities.
Expressing gratitude, Patra thanked the party leadership and workers for their support during his time in the organisation. He described his association with the regional party as a meaningful experience and extended his best wishes for the party’s future growth.
Patra had contested the 2026 Assam Assembly elections from the Dibrugarh constituency as an AJP candidate. In the election, he lost to BJP leader and sitting MLA Prasanta Phukan by a margin of 72,043 votes. According to official figures, Phukan secured 1,06,803 votes, while Patra received 34,760 votes.
He was among the candidates named in the AJP’s first list ahead of the Assembly elections and was fielded as part of the party’s strategy to challenge the BJP’s dominance in the region.
