Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday, April 2, addressed public concerns regarding gestures of affection he receives from women supporters, describing such acts as expressions of respect and gratitude for his work in public service.
Speaking at a public event, CM Sarma emphasized that interactions such as hugs or kisses are meant as tokens of goodwill and appreciation for the government’s welfare initiatives and development programs. He urged that these gestures be seen in the context of public trust rather than controversy.
Responding to criticisms from opposition leaders, Assam CM said such reactions were being misinterpreted. “Elderly women, mothers, and sisters often express their appreciation in culturally familiar ways. These are not acts of impropriety but reflections of genuine regard,” he explained.
The Chief Minister highlighted that his administration prioritizes governance and welfare delivery over symbolic or identity-driven politics. “When we focus on the welfare of the people, their blessings and support naturally follow,” he added.
CM Sarma also referenced his extensive outreach through the ‘Ashirvaad Yatra’, noting that during his travels across Assam, supporters expressed their gratitude in various ways some verbally, while others, especially women, conveyed their appreciation through physical gestures.
