Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on April 2 launched a scathing critique of the Assam Jatiya Parishad(AJP), questioning the background of the party's Central Guwahati candidate Kunki Choudhary and raising concerns over social media posts linked to his family.

Speaking to reporters, CM Sarma clarified that he had no objection to Kunki Choudhary’s mother, Sujata Gurung Choudhary, being a Sikkim resident. However, he alleged that her activity on social media was “offensive to public sentiments.”

According to CM Sarma, her Instagram posts reportedly included images of beef consumption and comments that he claimed were critical of Sanatan Dharma. The Chief Minister further accused her of publicly supporting controversial figures such as Sharjeel Imam and Umar Khalid, who have previously sparked nationwide debates.

Assam CM also alleged that Sujata Gurung Choudhary had made remarks about strategic topics, including the “chicken neck” corridor in Assam, and questioned certain religious beliefs, including references to Lord Krishna. Additionally, he claimed she had expressed views that appeared to challenge India’s stance toward Pakistan, which he said raised serious concerns about the candidate’s background.

Targeting AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi, CM Sarma urged the party to examine the matter and verify the authenticity of the social media statements attributed to Kunki Choudhary’s mother.
