Assam down town University Observes National Librarians' Day

Eminent writer and journalist Bikash Sarkar has emphasised that while technological advancements have transformed the world of books, the fundamental role and appeal of libraries remain unchanged.

Sarkar was speaking as the keynote speaker at a special programme organised at the Harinarayan Dattabaruah Central Library of Assam down town University, Guwahati, to mark National Librarians’ Day.

“Books are a driving force of human civilisation. With the advancement of technology, the world of books has also undergone significant changes. However, the essence of books and their appeal remain unchanged,” Sarkar said.

He underlined the role of libraries in preserving the continuity of reading and knowledge, describing a library as a “temple of books” and librarians as its “custodians”.

During the programme, University Librarian Dr Ruby Goswami spoke about the life and contributions of Dr S. R. Ranganathan, widely regarded as the father of library science in India.

At the beginning of the event, Assam down town University Vice Chancellor Dr Narayan Chandra Talukdar felicitated Bikash Sarkar.

Addressing students, University Chancellor Dr Narendranath Dutta highlighted the continuing importance of libraries in students’ academic and personal development.

Dr Santosh Mohan Upadhyay delivered the vote of thanks, while Saraswati Vandana was performed by Brishti Mousam Kashyap. The programme was conducted by Assistant Professor Pangkhi Kashyap.

The observance of National Librarians’ Day highlighted the continuing role of libraries in encouraging reading habits and fostering a culture of knowledge and learning amid rapid technological change.
