In a major political setback for the Congress in Assam, party president and CM-aspirant Gaurav Gogoi has been defeated in Jorhat constituency, despite a high-profile contest and expectations around his candidacy.
The seat has been won by senior BJP leader Hitendra Nath Goswami of the BJP, who secured a decisive victory in a clean sweep of all 14 EVM rounds.
Goswami polled 69,439 votes, winning by a substantial margin of 23,182 votes, while Gaurav Gogoi finished with 46,257 votes.
Other candidates remained far behind in the contest. Aam Aadmi Party nominee Pranab Priyankush Dutta received 701 votes, while Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) candidate Hemanta Kumar Pegu secured 581 votes. NOTA recorded 1,319 votes.
The result marks a significant win for the BJP in a high-profile constituency, with Jorhat delivering a strong mandate in favour of Hitendra Nath Goswami from the outset of counting.
