A young Assamese girl studying in Shillong has earned national recognition for her excellence in classical dance, in a remarkable example of cultural dedication amid a modern environment.
Anisha Saikia, a native of Panigaon in Lakhimpur district, has successfully qualified for the Government of India’s Cultural Talent Search Scholarship Scheme for the 2025-26 academic year.
Currently residing in Meghalaya due to her family’s professional commitments, Anisha is a Class IX student of Loreto Convent School in Shillong. She is the daughter of Dr Raju Saikia and Hima Das. Despite growing up in a city known for its modern, western-influenced and multicultural lifestyle, Anisha has remained deeply rooted in her cultural heritage, dedicating herself to the spiritually rich Sattriya dance form of Assam.
Her achievement is being widely attributed to the guidance and mentorship of her dance guru, Darshana Kumari, whose dedication and consistent efforts have played a crucial role in shaping Anisha’s journey. Training regularly under her at Nrityabhoomi Shillong, Anisha honed her skills through disciplined practice and unwavering commitment.
The achievement has also highlighted the efforts made to introduce and promote Assamese classical dance forms among students in Shillong, creating opportunities for young learners to stay connected with their cultural roots.
