Assam police have arrested a well-known drug trafficker and his mother in a significant operation that has exposed a hidden network of illegal trade in the Margherita region.

The accused, identified as Chandan Das alias “Nal” (46), was arrested during a special operation conducted by Tinsukia district police. His mother, Putuli Das, has also been taken into custody for her alleged involvement in assisting the illegal activities.

The operation was carried out under the supervision of senior police officials, including DSP Faiz Ahmed of Tinsukia and Officer-in-Charge of Margherita Police Station Nilotpal Doley.

During the raid, police made a shocking recovery from the accused’s residence. Officials found over seven lakh rupees in cash, carefully hidden underground inside the house. The total amount recovered stands at Rs 7,20,950.

Along with the cash, police also seized a quantity of suspected narcotics weighing around 28 grams, a gold chain weighing over 45 grams, three mobile phones, and several other items believed to be linked to drug trafficking activities.

Police said the accused had long been active in the illegal drug trade and had earlier faced criminal cases related to narcotics. Despite previous arrests and release, he allegedly continued his involvement in the same activities.

Locals have described him as a notorious figure who had been pushing drugs into the area, affecting many young lives. His arrest has been widely welcomed by residents, who have expressed relief over the police action.
