With the election atmosphere intensifying across Assam, sharp political exchanges marked campaign rallies on Saturday, as leaders from both the ruling BJP and the opposition alliance sought to shape the narrative ahead of the Assam Assembly election 2026.
Addressing supporters at a public meeting in Silchar, senior BJP leader Nitin Nabin launched a pointed attack on opposition figures, accusing them of engaging in "part-time politics.” Without naming individuals, he suggested that several rival leaders surface only during election season, contrasting them with BJP workers, whom he described as consistently active among the public.
He asserted that the BJP’s political culture is rooted in year-round engagement rather than sporadic outreach, claiming that party representatives remain accessible and accountable beyond electoral cycles. Nabin also used the platform to underline the party’s long-term vision, stating that the BJP is working toward transforming Assam into a developed state by 2047.
Echoing confidence in the party’s electoral prospects, Assam minister Pijush Hazarika said the ruling alliance is poised for a strong mandate. He argued that voters are likely to back continuity, citing what he described as significant advancements in the state’s healthcare and education infrastructure under BJP governance.
Drawing comparisons with previous administrations, Hazarika claimed that the current government has overseen a substantial expansion in institutional capacity, including the establishment of multiple medical colleges and universities, figures he contrasted with those during the Congress era.
However, the opposition mounted a parallel campaign in Sarupathar, where Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and Assam Jatiya Parishad president Lurinjyoti Gogoi rallied in support of alliance candidate Jiban Chutia. Their speeches focused on criticising the BJP-led state government and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing the administration of failing to address key public concerns.
The opposition leaders sought to position the alliance as an alternative capable of challenging the BJP’s dominance, urging voters to reconsider their support in light of governance issues they highlighted during the campaign.
