The second phase of EVM randomisation in Assam will be conducted on March 29, from 9:00 AM onwards at the offices of District Election Officers, covering all 126 Assembly constituencies.
The exercise, which allocates Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) units to polling stations, is being carried out to ensure transparency and fairness ahead of the Assam assembly elections.
How EVM Randomisation Process Will Be Conducted
The process will be overseen by Returning Officers using the EVM Management System (EMS) software developed by the Election Commission of India. It will take place in the presence of contesting candidates or their authorised representatives, along with General Observers appointed by the Election Commission.
This stage involves assigning available EVMs within each constituency to specific polling stations through a randomised system, eliminating the possibility of manual selection.
Scale of EVM and VVPAT Deployment Across Assam
Following supplementary randomisation conducted at the district level, the number of machines to be deployed has increased. A total of 41,353 Ballot Units (BUs), 45,572 Control Units (CUs), and 44,761 VVPATs will now be allocated.
These machines will be distributed across 31,490 polling stations in the state, including four auxiliary polling stations, reflecting the scale of logistical preparations underway.
Transparency Measures and Poll Day Usage
Authorities said that detailed lists of EVMs and VVPATs assigned to each polling station, along with reserve units, will be shared with all contesting candidates. Only those machines allocated through this randomisation process will be used during polling.
The exercise is a key procedural step aimed at reinforcing transparency and ensuring the integrity of the electoral process in Assam.
