The Assam government has taken strict action against five LPG distributors across the state, suspending their operations with immediate effect after discrepancies were detected in the supply and distribution system, officials confirmed on Saturday.
The decision was announced through a statement issued by the Office of the Chief Secretary, amid intensified surveillance of fuel distribution networks. The move comes in the backdrop of global uncertainties linked to West Asia and follows directives from the Centre to tighten monitoring of essential commodities.
The agencies facing suspension include distributors based in Tezpur, Biswanath Charali, Dhubri, Howly in Barpeta district, and Hojai. Authorities have barred these entities from receiving any further LPG stock or allocations under the Supply Planning and Distribution (SPD) mechanism until further notice.
To ensure that households do not face inconvenience, the government has reassigned consumers attached to these distributors to nearby authorised agencies. Officials stressed that domestic LPG supply remains stable across Assam, with no reported shortages.
In a parallel development, the state has secured an increase in commercial LPG allocation, which has now been enhanced to 70 per cent following adherence to specific reform measures. This step is expected to support businesses and commercial establishments dependent on LPG.
Reaffirming its strict stance, the government said it will not tolerate any malpractice in the distribution of essential goods. Authorities indicated that further action could follow based on findings from the ongoing review process being carried out in coordination with oil marketing companies.
Officials added that the situation continues to be closely tracked to protect consumer interests and maintain an uninterrupted supply chain across the state.
