The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday unveiled a fresh round of organisational changes, appointing new state presidents for its units in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Tripura. The announcement was made by national president Nitin Nabin as part of an ongoing restructuring within the party.
Harsh Malhotra has been named the new president of the Delhi unit, replacing Virendra Sachdeva. In Punjab, Kewal Singh Dhillon takes over from Sunil Jakhar. Archana Gupta has been appointed Haryana BJP chief in place of Mohan Lal Badoli, while Abhishek Debroy replaces Rajib Bhattacharjee as the head of the Tripura unit.
Kewal Singh Dhillon, a former MLA from Barnala, brings extensive political experience to his new role in Punjab. He was earlier associated with the Congress and is considered close to former Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh before joining the BJP in 2022.
Dhillon represented the Barnala Assembly constituency from 2007 to 2017. He was defeated by AAP’s Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer in 2017 and later lost the 2019 Lok Sabha election from Sangrur to Bhagwant Mann. After switching to the BJP, he contested both the 2022 Sangrur Lok Sabha bypoll and the 2024 Barnala Assembly bypoll but did not secure victories.
Leadership Reset Ahead of 2027 Elections
Political observers view Dhillon’s elevation as a calibrated move by the BJP to project a Sikh face in Punjab ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. The leadership change is seen as part of a broader strategy to recalibrate the party’s positioning in the state.
With new leadership in place across key states, the BJP is expected to realign its organisational priorities, though the immediate roadmap under the new appointees remains to be outlined.
