The incident took place in the Hatigarh area of Bokajan, where a 30-year-old woman, identified as Barsha Kakoti, was found brutally murdered inside her own residence. According to initial reports, unknown miscreants allegedly entered her house, taking advantage of her being alone and carried out the horrific crime.

Police from Bokajan station reached the spot soon after being informed and launched an investigation. Although one individual, identified as Sakib Khan, who reportedly used to visit the victim’s house occasionally, was detained for questioning, he was later released. Three days after the incident, the main accused has yet to be arrested, leading to growing anger among residents.

Amid rising public anger, women’s organisations in Bokajan, the All Assam Women's Power Association (AAWPA), have come out in protest. On Monday, the groups submitted a memorandum through the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Bokajan, addressed to the Chief Minister and the District Commissioner, demanding immediate arrest of the culprit and exemplary punishment.

The organisations also urged for stricter laws to prevent such crimes, appealing to President Droupadi Murmu to ensure that incidents like the Nirbhaya case are not repeated and that offenders are dealt with firmly.

As the investigation continues, the case has not only shaken Bokajan but also reignited the debate over women’s safety and the effectiveness of law enforcement in dealing with such heinous crimes.
