With Assembly elections approaching in several states, the Election Commission of India has issued fresh instructions to make voting more comfortable and accessible for people.
The poll body has asked Chief Electoral Officers of Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal to ensure that all polling stations are fully prepared before voting day. These directions also apply to upcoming by-elections in six states.
According to the Commission, every polling station must have basic facilities for voters. These include drinking water, shaded waiting areas, toilets with water, proper lighting and clear signage. Special attention has been given to accessibility, with instructions to provide ramps for persons with disabilities and proper voting compartments.
To make things easier for voters standing in long queues, officials have also been told to arrange benches at regular intervals so people can sit while waiting for their turn.
The Commission is also focusing on voter awareness. It has been directed that important posters be displayed at polling stations. These will include details such as polling station information, a list of candidates, voting instructions and required ID documents.
In addition, Voter Assistance Booths will be set up at every polling location. These booths will help voters find their polling station and check their names on the voter list quickly.
In a new step for voter convenience, mobile phone deposit facilities will be arranged outside polling stations. Voters will be required to switch off their phones and leave them at a designated counter before entering, and collect them after casting their vote.
The Election Commission has made it clear that all these arrangements are mandatory and must be completed well before polling begins. The aim, it said, is to ensure a smooth and hassle-free voting experience for every citizen.
