Eight Lion Cubs Die in Gir in a Week; Gujarat Steps Up Measures

Eight Lion Cubs Die in Gir in a Week; Gujarat Steps Up Measures

PratidinTime 2 weeks ago

Eight Asiatic lion cubs have died in the Gir forest region over the past week, raising concern among wildlife authorities.

The Gujarat government said it has increased monitoring and taken preventive steps in the affected areas.

Forest Minister Arjun Modhwadia said the situation is being closely watched, with regular updates being shared with top authorities.

Officials said no new deaths have been reported in the last two days, bringing some relief. Early reports suggest that some of the cubs may have died due to a disease called babesiosis, while others may have died due to fights or natural causes.

Samples have been sent for testing, and detailed reports are expected in the next few days. Experts from veterinary teams are also helping in the investigation.

As a precaution, lions in areas within a 10-kilometre radius have been closely monitored, and special cleaning measures are being carried out to control parasites.

The Gir forest is the only home of the Asiatic lions in the world. According to recent data, their population has grown to around 891 in 2025, up from 674 in 2020.

Officials said there is no sign of a large outbreak at present. In 2018, a disease outbreak killed several lions in a short period, but no similar situation has been seen since.
