Four members of a family, including a former Sarpanch and a former district council member, were found dead inside a burnt car in Rajasthan's Ajmer district early Thursday morning, police said.
The incident took place in Shrirampura village, where the charred vehicle was discovered about 500 metres away from the victims’ house, along a roadside stretch.
The deceased have been identified as Ram Singh Chaudhary, a former Sarpanch, his elderly mother aged 79, his wife Suryagyan, who had earlier served as a district council member, and his 30-year-old cousin sister.
According to Ajmer Superintendent of Police Harshvardhan Agarwal, the incident is believed to have occurred between 4 am and 5 am.
Police said that three of the bodies were completely burnt, while one body was only partially charred and showed visible injury marks, raising suspicion about the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
Authorities are currently investigating whether the fire broke out due to a vehicle-related issue or if the victims were killed before the car was set on fire.
Forensic teams have been deployed to the scene and nearby locations to collect evidence and piece together what happened. Police have also detained some relatives of the deceased for questioning as part of the ongoing investigation.
