A fresh political confrontation erupted on Wednesday after Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra strongly criticised Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his alleged comments targeting senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge.
In a post on X, Vadra wrote, "The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has used extremely rude and derogatory language against Congress President and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, which is utterly shameful and unacceptable."
She further highlighted that Kharge is not only a representative of the Congress party but also a voice for the Dalit community and marginalised sections of society. According to her, any attack on him goes beyond personal criticism and reflects an affront to large sections of society.
Escalating her criticism, Vadra argued that such language from a constitutional office-bearer undermines democratic values and public discourse. She also sought a response from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, questioning whether the central leadership endorses such remarks.
This comes after Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma critiqued Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge over his statement about seeking clarification from the central government and the foreign minister after police raided the Congress leader Pawan Khera's Delhi residence, as the CM's wife filed an FIR against him.
The complaint was lodged by BJP Assam spokesperson Ranjib Kumar Sarmah, who accused Kharge of making inflammatory comments while addressing a gathering at Nilambazar in Sribhumi district on April 7. According to the complaint, Kharge allegedly described the ideology of the BJP and RSS as “poisonous” and compared it to a “poisonous snake.”
It also claims that the Congress leader made remarks calling for the removal of the BJP, which the complainant said could hurt sentiments and create tension among different groups.
