The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee on Saturday launched a strong attack on the state government over the ongoing flood situation in Assam, accusing Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of completely failing to address the crisis.
Addressing a press conference at Rajiv Bhawan, Congress leaders demanded the resignation of the Chief Minister, alleging that the government has failed in flood management, relief distribution, and rehabilitation efforts.
Senior Congress leader Nilomoni Sen Deka alleged that the Centre has provided inadequate funds to Assam under the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) compared to other states during the current flood crisis. He claimed that the Assam government failed to make any provision for the Central Road Fund (CRF) in the state budget, forcing the state to depend on the Centre for financial assistance.
Taking a sharp jibe at the Chief Minister, Deka alleged that Himanta Biswa Sharma wasseeking funds from the Centre instead of taking responsibility for the flood situation. The Congress leader demanded that floods in Assam be declared a national issue and called for special measures to support affected families.
The party also demanded GST exemption on materials purchased for rebuilding houses damaged by floods. Congress leaders questioned why the Chief Minister has not yet provided a clear explanation regarding the reasons behind the recurring floods in Assam.
The opposition party alleged that coal syndicates could be linked to the worsening flood situation and demanded a detailed investigation into the causes of the disaster. However, Congress stated that the probe should not be conducted by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and instead should be carried out by a sitting Supreme Court judge.
The Congress further criticised both the Central and state governments, alleging a lack of sympathy towards the flood-affected people of Assam. The party also accused the Chief Minister of creating religious divisions, claiming that financial assistance decisions were announced for temples but not for mosques.
The Assam Congress said it would continue to raise the concerns of flood-affected people and hold the government accountable for its response to the crisis.
