Guwahati to Get 5 Footbridges on NH-27 Before Durga Puja

Guwahati: Construction of five footbridges on National Highway-27 in Guwahati is underway after repeated accidents and public demand for safer crossing points, according to a report on Monday.

According to the initial report, the decision was announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma after a tragic accident at Lalmati raised concerns over pedestrian safety on the busy highway stretch. The footbridges are being constructed at Tetelia, Garbhanga area near Gorchuk, Royal Global University point, Sarusajai, and Lalmati along the Jalukbari to Khanapara route.

Each of these footbridges is being built at an estimated cost of Rs 30-35 lakh. Construction is underway, and officials expect all five structures to be ready before the upcoming Durga Puja festival if work continues on schedule.

The move comes after several incidents where pedestrians lost their lives while trying to cross the highway, which sees heavy traffic throughout the day. Earlier, iron grills were installed on the road divider to discourage people from crossing at unsafe points.

With the new footbridges, residents will have a safer way to cross the highway, reducing the risk of accidents and ensuring smoother movement for both pedestrians and vehicles.
