Heavy rainfall overnight has once again thrown Guwahati and the surrounding areas under severe urban flooding, with several parts of the Kamrup Metropolitan district reporting widespread waterlogging since early Monday morning.
Low-lying and densely populated areas such as Rukminigaon, Hatigaon, Juripar, Ghoramara, Panjabari, Sijubari, Satgaon, Jatia, Anil Nagar, Nabin Nagar, Rajgarh, Sorumotoria, Bormotoria, Narengi, Maligaon and Boragaon were among the worst affected as streets turned into water channels and normal movement came to a halt.
Authorities have confirmed that emergency response systems were immediately activated after multiple distress calls were received through toll-free helplines. Teams from Fire and Emergency Services, SDRF and other agencies were deployed to affected locations to assist residents and carry out rescue operations. So far, around 50 people have been evacuated from waterlogged areas.
The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has stated that water levels in several locations are now slowly receding. To manage the situation, 22 major pumps and 35 portable pumps have been pressed into service across key flood-hit zones, including Rukminigaon, Tarun Nagar, Anil Nagar, Lachit Nagar and Bharalu Mukh.
Despite continuous pumping efforts, several neighbourhoods remain underwater, causing major disruption to daily life, traffic movement and essential services.
In a tragic incident amid the flooding, a woman identified as Payel Nath of Dharapur lost her life after falling into an overflowing drain at Maligaon Chariali. She was rescued and taken to Pandu FRU, but was later declared dead by doctors.
Officials from DDMA, GMC, GMDA, along with police, Fire & Emergency Services, SDRF and NDRF, have been deployed across vulnerable locations since last night to manage rescue and relief operations.
Meanwhile, rainfall data from the past 24 hours indicates heavy to very heavy showers in multiple parts of Guwahati and nearby areas, which have significantly contributed to the current flood-like situation.
With water still stagnant in many areas, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as residents struggle with disrupted mobility and persistent urban flooding, once again exposing the city's drainage challenges.
