Himanta Biswa Sarma was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Assam for a second consecutive term on Tuesday, in the presence of several top central leaders.
The oath-taking ceremony was held in a grand manner at Khanapara in Guwahati.
Sarma took oath days after leading the BJP-led NDA to a decisive victory, securing 102 seats in the Assembly polls. With this, he also created history by becoming the first non-Congress leader in Assam to serve two back-to-back terms as Chief Minister.
The ceremony witnessed the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, along with several other Union ministers. Chief Ministers and Deputy Chief Ministers from multiple states across the country also attended the high-profile event, reflecting its political significance.
A large number of BJP workers, panchayat representatives, and supporters from across Assam also gathered at the venue, with officials estimating a crowd of over one lakh people. Security was tightened across Guwahati, with central and state forces deployed to manage the massive turnout and ensure smooth conduct of the ceremony.
After Sarma took oath as Chief Minister, the new cabinet was formed with four leaders joining as ministers. BJP leader Rameswar Teli and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) leader Atul Bora were among the first to be sworn in as cabinet ministers. They were followed by Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) leader Charan Boro.
Later, Ajanta Neog also took oath as a cabinet minister, completing the initial list of the new council of ministers.
With the new term beginning, CM Sarma has pledged to continue focusing on Assam’s development and security, promising an “unstoppable journey” for the state’s progress.
