The Indian Air Force's famous Sarang helicopter display team is all set to put up a spectacular aerial show in Pune during the Passing Out Parade of the National Defence Academy's 150th course.
The event will take place on May 29 and will mark an important milestone, as it also features the third batch of women cadets graduating from the NDA.
The Sarang team will perform over the iconic NDA campus, including areas around Sudan Block and Salaria Square, after the convocation ceremony of the passing out course.
Known for their precision flying and eye-catching formations, the team will showcase several signature moves such as the diamond formation, crossover manoeuvre, and the famous “Sarang Split”. This time, the display becomes even more special as the team will fly with five helicopters instead of the earlier four, making the formations more complex and challenging.
The Sarang team, which began as an experimental helicopter display unit in 2003 and was officially named in 2004, has grown into one of the most recognised aerial display teams of the Indian Air Force. The word “Sarang” means peacock in Sanskrit, symbolising grace and beauty in flight.
Over the years, the team has performed more than 1,200 shows at over 390 locations across India and abroad, earning praise for its skill, discipline and precision.
Speaking ahead of the performance, team members said the transition from a four-helicopter formation to a five-helicopter formation has made their routines more demanding, especially during complex moves like crossovers and the final split manoeuvre.
The pilots also shared that every member undergoes strict selection and continuous training, with each performance carefully reviewed to ensure safety and accuracy.
The helicopters used by the Sarang team are the indigenously built Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH), showcasing India’s growing strength in defence aviation technology.
