The Indian women's cricket team may have bowed out early from the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026, but there is still a major reason to celebrate.
Harmanpreet Kaur’s side has officially qualified for the Los Angeles Olympics 2028.
The confirmation came after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board approved the qualification system for cricket’s return to the Olympics. The sport is set to feature at the LA Games in 2028, marking its comeback after a gap of 128 years since it was last played at the 1900 Paris Olympics.
How India Secured Qualification
India clinched their Olympic spot as the highest-ranked Asian team in the ongoing Women’s T20 World Cup. Although they failed to reach the semi-finals, their overall performance ensured they finished ahead of all other teams from the continent, securing Asia’s lone automatic qualification berth.
Along with India, Australia, Great Britain (represented by England), and South Africa have also booked their places in the Olympics as the top teams from their respective regions, Oceania, Europe, and Africa.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed that these teams qualified based on their standings in the ongoing global tournament.
Cricket at the Los Angeles Olympics will feature both men’s and women’s T20 competitions. Each category will include six teams, with squads of up to 15 players.
A total of 90 athlete quota spots have been allocated for each competition, and the tournament will see 28 matches played across both men’s and women’s events.
India’s Campaign in the T20 World Cup 2026
India began their World Cup journey on a strong note, registering a dominant 64-run victory over their arch-rivals in the opening match. They followed it up with another impressive performance, defeating the Netherlands by 95 runs.
However, their campaign faced a setback when they lost to South Africa. The team managed to bounce back with a five-wicket win over Bangladesh, keeping their semi-final hopes alive.
In a crucial must-win game against Australia, India fell short, losing by six wickets. The defeat ended their chances of progressing further in the tournament.
India eventually finished third in Group A with six points and a healthy net run rate of +1.718.
While the early exit from the World Cup was disappointing, Olympic qualification offers a significant boost for the team. With cricket returning to the global sporting stage after more than a century, India will now have the opportunity to compete for Olympic glory in Los Angeles.
