Marking Endangered Species Day, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the release of India's first satellite-tagged Ganges softshell turtle at Kaziranga National Park, calling it a major step in wildlife conservation.
Sharing the update on social media, the Chief Minister said the initiative represents an important milestone for both conservation efforts and scientific wildlife monitoring in the country.
He described the event as a proud moment for Assam and said the state remains committed to protecting its rich biodiversity and safeguarding endangered species found in its forests and wetlands.
The satellite-tagging project is expected to help forest officials and researchers track the movement and behaviour of the endangered turtle, which will support better planning for its long-term protection.
The Ganges softshell turtle is a freshwater species found in river systems across the Indian subcontinent. It is considered vulnerable due to habitat loss, pollution, and illegal hunting in several areas.
