With US President Donald Trump's deadline for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz looming, Iran has called on its youth to form symbolic 'human chains' around key power plants across the country.
The Ministry of Sports and Youth urged young Iranians, including students, artists, and athletes, to gather at nuclear and power facilities from 2:00 pm local time on Tuesday. This comes about 13 hours before Trump’s deadline at 3:30 am on Wednesday.
Alireza Rahimi, Iran’s Deputy Minister of Youth Affairs, said in a video message that the initiative was proposed by young Iranians themselves. “This symbolic action, called the ‘Human Chain of Iran’s Youth for a Bright Future,’ reflects the commitment of our youth to protect the country’s infrastructure and secure a better future,” he said.
The move comes amid rising tensions between Washington and Tehran. Trump has issued stern warnings, threatening to target Iranian power plants and bridges if the Strait of Hormuz remains closed. “The entire country can be taken out in one night… every bridge will be decimated and power plants destroyed,” he said, emphasising that his deadline is final.
Iran, however, has rejected a 45-day ceasefire proposal, insisting on a permanent end to hostilities. Diplomatic efforts continue behind the scenes, with mediators including Pakistan trying to negotiate a resolution.
