Speaking to reporters, Sangma said the government is examining all possible reasons behind the persistent waterlogging, with ongoing road construction works in Meghalaya emerging as one of the likely factors.

He said construction activities, particularly near the flyover project, may have altered the area's natural drainage system.

"One of the possible reasons could be the ongoing road construction. The area in front of the flyover has become nearly a foot lower, which is causing water to accumulate within a short span of time," Sangma said.

The Chief Minister, however, clarified that the government has not ruled out other possible causes and is carrying out a comprehensive assessment before taking corrective measures.

He said the government is evaluating every possible solution to address the problem and remove the difficulties faced by the public.

Jorabat, one of the most flood-prone locations along the Assam-Meghalaya inter-state border, has witnessed repeated incidents of artificial flooding during spells of heavy rainfall. The waterlogging frequently disrupts vehicular movement on the busy corridor, causing severe traffic congestion and hardship for commuters travelling between Assam and Meghalaya.

Sangma said the Meghalaya government remains committed to identifying the root cause of the flooding and implementing appropriate measures to prevent its recurrence.
