Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress president and the party's Dispur candidate, Mira Borthakur, alleged on Friday that stones were thrown at her and Congress supporters during a rally in Basistha's Ganesh Nagar, Ward 56.
Calling the incident “unfortunate,” Borthakur said that such acts of intimidation and violence are unacceptable and not in line with the values of Assam’s people.
“It is very unfortunate that during a peaceful rally, stones were pelted at us. This kind of unruliness is extremely unfortunate. Our workers and supporters have been injured. We are democratically seeking people’s votes. If they like our work, they will vote for us; if not, then they will not. However, this sort of intimidation tactics…you have seen how they targeted our vehicles in Jalukbari…what sort of unruliness is this? We don’t want Bihar, UP-like elections here. People of Assam are peaceful,” Borthakur said.
She added that while political disagreements are natural, physical attacks have no place in Assam’s politics. “People of Dispur have to decide. We have to denounce such acts. If they want to stop us by hurting us, we will only rise with more honest work. We will continue to uphold the values of democracy. We will earn people’s votes, not by employing hurtful and intimidating tactics. Such acts do not have any place in the politics of Assam. If I am voted to power, I will ensure that before a single stone touches the people, it will have to go through me,” Borthakur asserted.
