BJP MP Nishikant Dubey on Tuesday targeted the Congress party, alleging that former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and the then Congress government were responsible for dividing Assam during the early 1960s.

In a post on social media platform X, Dubey referred to May 19, 1961, claiming it as a "dark chapter" and alleging that decisions taken during Nehru's tenure led to unrest in Assam, particularly in the Barak Valley region. He further claimed that the situation at the time resulted in violence and loss of lives during language-related tensions.

Dubey also alleged that policies introduced in the 1960s, including language-related decisions, created divisions among communities in Assam, while accusing the then leadership of ignoring concerns raised by people in the region.

In another recent post, the BJP MP also repeated allegations against Nehru regarding the arrest of Jan Sangh founder Shyama Prasad Mukherjee in Jammu and Kashmir in 1953, and subsequent events related to his death in custody.

The remarks come amid a renewed political exchange between the BJP and Congress over historical events and their interpretation.

Earlier, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had also criticised the Nehru-Gandhi family, alleging that Congress governments had not acted in the interest of Assam and pointing to historical developments during the 1962 war with China.

Shah, while addressing a public event, also highlighted the BJP government's efforts in Assam, including peace accords, infrastructure development, and education initiatives. He mentioned agreements aimed at restoring stability in the state and credited the Centre for bringing major institutions like the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) project to benefit students in the region.
