'Only God Knows...': Rajnath Singh Warns Pakistan Over Kolkata Strike Threat

Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday warned Pakistan against making inflammatory statements with the potential of escalating tensions between the two neighbouring nations.

This comes after his Pakistan counterpart, Khawaja Asif, spoke about striking Kolkata in the event of any misadventure by India. Responding to it, Singh cited the historical backdrop of Pakistan’s division more than five decades ago.

He said, “The Pakistan Defence Minister should not have said such a provocative thing. They suffered the consequence 55 years ago when Pakistan was divided into two parts.”

“Only God knows how many parts Pakistan will be divided into this time, if they try to cast an eye on Bengal,” Singh added.
The comments came after Khawaja Asif warned that if India conducted what he called a “false-flag operation”, Pakistan would strike Kolkata in response.

On Saturday, Asif mentioned that Pakistan's response would be strong in the event of any future escalation on India’s part. While speaking to reporters in Sialkot, around 130 kilometres from Lahore, he said, “If India tries to stage any false flag operation this time, then God-willingly, we will take it to Kolkata.”

Without presenting any evidence, he cited reports of a possible false-flag operation involving individuals in Pakistan’s detention, alleging India could portray bodies as terrorists.

Asif had earlier said that Pakistan’s response to any attack would be “swift, calibrated, and decisive.” He was responding to previous remarks by Rajnath Singh, who had warned that any “misadventure” in the prevailing situation would invite an “unprecedented and decisive” response.

Tensions following the Pahalgam attack on April 22 of last year, which led to a four-day confrontation between India and Pakistan, are the background of the statement exchange.
