In a story of grit and extraordinary determination, Vikram Chettri, a young lad from Dhekiajuli in Assam's Sonitpur district, has emerged as an inspiring figure after securing 89.4% in the Higher Secondary (Arts) examination.

Vikram’s journey is far from ordinary. He lost his mother at the age of just two and his father when he was 11, while studying in Class V. With no one at home to guide or support him, he chose to live alone from a very young age, taking full responsibility for his life and education.

Despite the hardships, Vikram continued his studies while managing all household chores on his own, including cooking his meals. Living in a modest two-room house in a Nepali locality near Dhekiajuli town, he studied under extremely difficult conditions, often relying on kerosene lamps and basic solar lights due to lack of electricity until recently.

He completed his primary education at a government school about a kilometre from his home, and later passed his High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) examination from Dhekiajuli Don Bosco High School with 80% marks.

With no steady source of income except a small monthly assistance provided under a government scheme for orphaned children, continuing education was a challenge. At this crucial stage, Kajal Bora, the proprietor and principal of Lakshminath Bezbaroa Academy in Dhekiajuli, stepped in to support him. Vikram pursued his Higher Secondary education from the institution and went on to score an impressive 89.4% in the Arts stream.

Notably, Vikram has an elder brother, but due to the family’s financial constraints, he has been living elsewhere since childhood. Bit Vikram was determined to pursue his education and chose to stay back alone to continue his studies against all odds.

When asked about his future aspirations, Chettri said, “I want to become successful, serve my community, and make Assam proud.”

The house he lives in, built nearly two decades ago under the Indira Awas Yojana, still lacks basic facilities. Even today, parts of the house remain incomplete, and electricity connection was only installed recently, just two months before his final examinations, thanks to the efforts of a local resident, Yadav Nirala, and support from Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL).

Vikram Chettri’s story stands as a powerful reminder that poverty and hardship cannot stand in the way of determination and education. His achievement has brought pride to the region and serves as an inspiration for countless students facing adversity.
