Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika began his election day on a spiritual note, offering prayers at the revered Deosal Temple on Friday (March 20), before filing his nomination from the Jagiroad Assembly constituency.
The senior BJP leader visited the temple in Morigaon district early in the day, seeking blessings ahead of formally entering the fray for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections.
Speaking to the media after the visit, Hazarika expressed gratitude to the party leadership for once again placing its trust in him. He said this election marks his fourth attempt at representing the people in the Assembly.
Hazarika also appealed to voters to support the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), urging them to strengthen the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and bless Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for another term in office.
A seasoned politician, Hazarika has a strong electoral track record. He won the Jagiroad seat in both the 2016 and 2021 Assembly elections. Earlier, he was elected from the Raha constituency in 2011.
In Jagiroad, he is set to face a formidable challenge from Congress candidate Babul Das, a three-time former MLA who represented the constituency in 1996, 2001 and 2006.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is also gearing up to file his nomination from the Jalukbari constituency. A five-time MLA from Jalukbari. He is now seeking to retain his seat as he aims for a second consecutive term as Chief Minister.
Assam is headed for a high-stakes electoral contest, with the ruling NDA led by the BJP set to face off against the Congress and its allies for the 126-member Assembly. Polling is scheduled for April 9, while counting of votes will take place on May 4.
