Tensions flared in Upper Assam's Duliajan constituency after serious allegations surfaced against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Terash Gowalla for allegedly violating the Model Code of Conduct ahead of the upcoming Assam assembly elections.
According to sources, Gowalla has been accused of carrying out election campaigning activities within the constituency despite restrictions imposed under the poll code. The allegations triggered sharp reactions on the ground, with residents confronting the legislator during his visit.
Eyewitnesses claimed that a group of locals blocked the MLA on a public road, staging a spontaneous protest against him. Demonstrators raised slogans and expressed anger over what they described as both electoral misconduct and long-standing developmental failures in the constituency.
Duliajan, which has witnessed multiple protests in recent years over civic issues such as poor infrastructure and lack of basic amenities, has seen growing public frustration with elected representatives. The latest protest reflected a continuation of that discontent.
Protesters alleged that Gowalla has “completely failed” to deliver on development promises in the constituency, intensifying resentment among sections of the electorate. The confrontation on the streets underscored the rising political temperature in the run-up to polling.
