A shocking incident has come to light in the Arya Nagar area of Guwahati, where a public toilet has been turned into a hotel. The matter came to light on Wednesday after locals noticed unusual activity at the spot.
People were seen eating food inside the toilet area, and it was later found that a small hotel was running from the same place.
According to the initial report, the public toilet was built by the Lions Club for public use, especially for people visiting a nearby cancer hospital. However, the same place has now been turned into a small hotel. A food business is reportedly running right beside the toilet area.
Sources said that around eight plastic dining tables and chairs have been set up for customers. A refrigerator has also been placed very close to the toilet, which has raised serious concerns about cleanliness. What was once meant to help patients and visitors is now being misused as a food outlet, which many people have called unsafe and unhygienic.
The issue has led to strong reactions from student groups. Members of the Central Guwahati unit of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) have protested against this act. They said running a hotel in such a place is not acceptable and can harm people’s health. AJYCP president Sukumar Barman has also reacted strongly. He questioned how such a business is being allowed to run in such an unhealthy place.
Residents have further demanded that regular checks should be carried out in public places to prevent such misuse in the future. They also urged the administration to ensure that facilities meant for public welfare are used properly and not turned into private businesses.
