A fresh political storm has erupted in Assam after Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) chief Gaurav Gogoi sharpened his attack on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over allegations surrounding multiple passports linked to the latter's wife.

The controversy stems from claims made by All India Congress Committee (AICC) Media and Publicity Department Chairman Pawan Khera, who alleged that documents suggested that Sarma's wife holds multiple active passports, raising questions over possible violations of Indian law.

The issue gained traction after senior Congress leader Pawan Khera claimed that certain documents indicated the existence of more than one active passport allegedly connected to the Chief Minister’s wife. He questioned the legality of such a situation, raising concerns over possible violations of Indian citizenship laws, which do not permit dual nationality.

Khera also sought answers on how multiple passports could exist and whether due procedures had been followed, intensifying the political face-off. The Congress has since demanded a thorough probe, with Gogoi asserting that the Chief Minister must respond to the allegations and calling for scrutiny of his assets.

Responding to the controversy, CM Sarma on Sunday categorically rejected the claims, stating that one of the passports cited in the allegations purportedly issued in Dubai has already been verified as fake. He said both authorities in the United Arab Emirates and the Government of India have confirmed the document to be fraudulent.

“The photograph used in that passport does not belong to my wife. The document itself has been proven to be fabricated,” CM Sarma told reporters, adding that the Assam Police have initiated a formal inquiry into the matter.

He further informed that verification of the remaining documents is underway, and responses from the concerned foreign authorities are expected shortly.
