The Railway Department has sanctioned Rs 14 crore for the renovation of the Bhanga railway yard in Sreebhumi district, which has long been in a dilapidated condition.
Rajya Sabha MP and Railway Board member Kanad Purkayastha recently visited the yard to assess the situation on the ground. For years, the poor condition of the yard had created serious difficulties for both traders and labourers, leading to growing frustration in the region.
The Bhanga railway yard plays a crucial role in the movement of goods, especially for traders from the Barak Valley and neighbouring Tripura. Despite generating significant revenue for the Railways, the yard had not seen proper maintenance for a long time.
Large potholes and damaged infrastructure have made loading and unloading of goods extremely challenging. Traders and workers were often forced to deal with delays and unsafe conditions, affecting daily operations.
The Silchar Food Grains Merchants Association had been raising the issue with railway authorities since 2021, urging immediate intervention and repair.
Responding to these concerns, Kanad Purkayastha confirmed that Rs 14 crore has now been allocated for the renovation work. He also assured that the project is expected to be completed within the next six months.
