Rs 3.85 Crore 'Digital Arrest' Scam: Assam Cyber Police Arrest Accused

Rs 3.85 Crore 'Digital Arrest' Scam: Assam Cyber Police Arrest Accused

PratidinTime 2 weeks ago

In a crackdown on cybercrime, Assam Police's cyber cell has arrested a man from Dispur for allegedly cheating people of crores of rupees through online fraud.

The accused has been identified as Amit Kumar Beria, who was apprehended by the cyber police team. According to officials, he was involved in a “digital arrest” scam and is accused of siphoning off around Rs 3.85 crore.

Investigations revealed that Beria was part of a wider cyber fraud network that mainly targeted people outside the state. He allegedly duped a person from Telangana of Rs 26 lakh, while two individuals from Maharashtra were cheated of around Rs 44 lakh. Another victim from Odisha reportedly lost Rs 26.20 lakh to the accused.

Police said suspicion was first raised after unusually large amounts of money began flowing into Beria’s bank account within a short period of time. Acting on this, the HDFC Bank’s Six Mile branch filed a complaint at the CID cyber police station.

Based on the complaint, a case (No. 07/26) was registered, following which the accused was tracked down and arrested.

Beria has been taken into police custody for two days, and further investigation is underway to uncover the full extent of the fraud network.
