Congress candidate from Dispur, Mira Borthakur, has made a serious allegation regarding the structural condition of the Guwahati-North Guwahati bridge, claiming that a portion beneath a pillar has eroded.
Speaking at an election rally in Guwahati's Khanapara, Borthakur specifically said that a portion of pillar number 5 of the bridge has eroded and is a serious risk to public safety. The Congress leader was addressing the gathering as part of her ongoing campaign in the Dispur constituency, where she was joined by leaders and workers of the opposition alliance.
The bridge, which is named Kumar Bhaskar Varma bridge, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and is a key infrastructure project aimed at boosting connectivity between Guwahati and North Guwahati. Built at an estimated cost of around Rs 3,000 crore, the 1.24 km-long, six-lane structure is the first extradosed bridge in Northeast India and spans one of the region’s most challenging riverine terrains.
The bridge has significantly reduced travel time between the two sides of the Brahmaputra, from 45-60 minutes earlier to just about 7-10 minutes, providing a major relief to commuters and improving overall connectivity.
Furthermore, Borthakur, during her speech, also promised key developmental measures for residents living in Guwahati’s hill areas, including land pattas, roads, electricity, and water connections.
Launching a sharp attack on the BJP, Borthakur alleged that if the party returns to power, people living in the hills of Guwahati could face eviction.
“If BJP is voted to power, hill residents will be evicted and their land handed over to corporates like Adani and Ambani,” she claimed.
She added that only a Congress government could safeguard the rights of the people living in these areas.
Taking aim at Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, she claimed that he is politically worried about BJP Candidate Pradyut Bordoloi. She referring to discussions allegedly taking place within BJP offices regarding the Dispur constituency, saying said it reflects the ruling party’s concern over the seat.
Borthakur further expressed confidence that she would win the Dispur constituency with a significant margin.
