In a match that tested his burgeoning acclaim, 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi once again stamped himself as one of India's most exciting young talents with a blistering display in the Indian Premier League (IPL) clash between Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians in Guwahati on Tuesday.
Sooryavanshi, the left-handed opening batter who burst onto the scene last season with a stunning 35-ball century on IPL debut, has rapidly become a headline-grabbing figure across world cricket. The teenager was also named Player of the Tournament when India clinched the Under-19 Cricket World Cup earlier this year, a triumph that cemented his reputation as a future star.
This match presented perhaps his toughest early challenge yet: facing Jasprit Bumrah, widely regarded as one of the finest all-format fast bowlers of his generation. Despite the pressure of a rain-shortened contest reduced to 11 overs per side, Sooryavanshi responded with audacious intent.
After watching partner Yashasvi Jaiswal race to 22 runs off the first over against Deepak Chahar, Sooryavanshi made an immediate statement in Jasprit Bumrah's opening over. He unfurled a towering six over wide long-on off the very first ball, prompting a wry smile from the seasoned bowler. Just three deliveries later, he dispatched Bumrah again, flicking a short ball past backward square for another maximum.
But it wasn't just Bumrah who felt his power. In the very next over, Trent Boult was taken apart as Sooryavanshi hammered three sixes in his first four deliveries. Even Shardul Thakur was taken for a couple of heavy blows before Sooryavanshi's entertaining cameo came to an end, departing for a rapid 39 off 14 balls.
Though his stay at the crease was brief, the innings was a perfect encapsulation of his fearless approach, a blend of timing, power, and maturity far beyond his years.
Sooryavanshi's strike rate of 248.97 in this IPL season trails only Rajat Patidar's 254.83 among batters, and his 11 sixes rank alongside Sameer Rizvi among the tournament's most prolific hitters.
Jaiswal, unbeaten on 77, anchored the Royals' innings and propelled the side to 150 for 3, while the bowlers backed the total by restricting the Mumbai Indians to 123 for 9, sealing Rajasthan's third consecutive victory and consolidating their position at the top of the table.
"It's amazing batting with Vaibhav," Jaiswal said after the game. "He hit the first ball for a six, and that gave us belief. Facing someone like Bumrah, and seeing him take him on, that takes a lot of pressure off the rest of us."
