Trump NATO Exit Threat Grows Over Iran Strait Dispute

The NATO alliance is facing renewed strain after Donald Trump indicated that the United States may withdraw from the bloc, citing frustration over allies' refusal to support military action in the Strait of Hormuz amid the ongoing Iran conflict.

In an interview with The Telegraph, Trump said Washington is “strongly considering” exiting the defence alliance, describing NATO as ineffective and claiming the decision is now “beyond reconsideration.” The remarks mark one of his strongest critiques of the alliance since returning to office.

Trump’s anger stems from NATO members declining to participate in efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route that carries nearly 30 per cent of the world’s oil supply.

The waterway has been effectively blocked by Iran following large-scale strikes by the United States and Israel on Iranian territory. The conflict, which began on February 28, has sharply escalated tensions across the region.

Responding to a question on NATO membership, Trump said he had never been convinced by the alliance, calling it a “paper tiger” and suggesting even Russian President Vladimir Putin viewed it similarly.

In a series of sharp remarks, Trump criticised countries such as the United Kingdom for not backing US-led action in the Hormuz crisis.

He suggested that nations facing fuel shortages due to the blockade should procure energy from the United States or take independent military action to secure the route.

Trump went further, warning allies that Washington may no longer come to their defence. He told NATO members they would need to “learn to fight for themselves,” signalling a possible shift in US foreign policy and defence commitments.
