United Bengali Forum Backs Opposition Alliance Candidates in Assam Polls

The United Bengali Forum Assam (UBFA) has extended support to a cross-party group of candidates for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, prioritising community representation over political affiliations.

The decision was taken during an emergency extended executive meeting held on March 28, UBFA president Sahadev Das said, as the organisation called on Bengali voters across the state to back the selected nominees.

As per resolutions adopted at the meeting, the forum announced unconditional support to Jagadish Bhuyan (Sadiya), Mainak Patra (Dibrugarh), Ranjit Roy (Dhemaji), Gyanashree Bora (Mariani), Kunki Chowdhury (Guwahati Central), Mira Borthakur (Dispur), and Swapan Kar (Lumding).

The list cuts across candidates affiliated with the Congress, Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), and other political formations, underlining the forum’s stated approach of placing community interests above party loyalty. The UBFA also indicated that it may extend support to more candidates in other constituencies as the election process unfolds.

The organisation has directly appealed to the Bengali community to consolidate support behind the endorsed candidates to ensure their electoral success. According to Sahadev Das, the forum represents a broad spectrum of Bengali Hindu society, including intellectuals, legal professionals, doctors, journalists, social workers, and youth representatives from across Assam.

Describing itself as a non-political platform, the UBFA said it was formed to promote unity and address long-standing issues faced by the Assamese Bengali Hindu population. However, the forum acknowledged that many of these concerns are inherently political and require representation within the Legislative Assembly to be effectively addressed.

It also highlighted its engagement with youth and student groups, stating that it aims to counter divisive political strategies while working toward constructive, community-driven solutions across the state.
