Smartphone storage 2026 delivers powerful boost despite rising costs

Smartphone storage 2026 delivers powerful boost despite rising costs

Pune Times Mirror 2 months ago

Smartphone storage 2026 is heading for a noticeable jump, even as memory prices climb and older, smaller chips quietly disappear from production lines.

Analyst firm TrendForce expects the average smartphone storage 2026 capacity to grow by about 4.8 percent year-on-year, despite higher NAND flash prices squeezing manufacturers. The shift is being driven by two big forces: tighter supply of low-capacity memory and the growing weight of on-device artificial intelligence.

As chipmakers move to more advanced processes, they are phasing out low-density NAND dies, making smaller storage options harder to source at scale. In parallel, new "edge AI" models running directly on phones typically need about 40GB to 60GB of system storage for caching and local processing, leaving less room for photos, apps and video if overall capacity does not increase.

To keep pace, leading brands are already shifting their line-ups toward larger base capacities, with 256GB becoming the new reference point for flagship phones in smartphone storage 2026. TrendForce notes that Apple's upcoming iPhone 17 range is set to start at 256GB, up from 128GB, in part to support expanded Apple Intelligence AI features. Huawei is promoting 512GB variants in its Mate 80 series to handle offline, multimodal AI workloads, while Samsung's Galaxy S26 family is expected to drop 128GB entirely in favour of 256GB and above.

At the same time, premium brands that can absorb higher memory costs are cutting back on low-capacity models with weaker margins, concentrating shipments on 256GB and higher tiers. For many mid-range Android phones, 128GB storage is likely to shift from default to optional, and may gradually vanish from mainstream line-ups by the end of 2026.

For consumers, the smartphone storage 2026 trend is a mixed outcome. On the positive side, more users should get enough space for AI tools, 4K video and growing app sizes without constantly juggling files; on the downside, devices may cost more upfront, and truly budget phones with lower storage options could become harder to find.

But with AI moving closer to the centre of everyday smartphone use, analysts expect the push toward higher capacities to continue well beyond smartphone storage 2026, setting a new baseline of 256GB for the mass market in the years ahead.
