The 3 Idiots sequel is finally real, with Aamir Khan confirming that director Rajkumar Hirani is actively working on the follow-up to the 2009 blockbuster.
Speaking in a recent interview, Aamir Khan revealed that Hirani, whom he fondly calls Raju, is currently developing the 3 Idiots sequel and has already narrated the story to him. He described the script as "wonderful", adding that while more work is needed on the screenplay, the basic idea has impressed him. According to Khan, the new film will pick up the lives of Rancho, Farhan and Raju around 10 years after the events of the original story, capturing where the trio find themselves as older, slightly wiser adults.
Khan has also indicated he intends to return as Phunsukh Wangdu, the genius engineer and unconventional educator revealed in the film's climax. He noted that writer Abhijat Joshi and Hirani have worked closely on the script, and called it a "beautiful story" that retains the same humour and off-beat tone that made the first film a phenomenon.
The 3 Idiots sequel will again be directed by Rajkumar Hirani, who wrote, edited and directed the original film, co-written with Abhijat Joshi and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. Industry reports suggest that Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi are expected to reunite as Rancho, Farhan and Raju, with Kareena Kapoor Khan also likely to return, effectively bringing back the film's core ensemble. Trade outlets have reported that the script has been locked and that the team believes the new story recaptures the emotional depth and social bite of the first film.
Although an exact shooting schedule has not been announced, the project is expected to move forward once Hirani wraps work on his other long-gestating commitments. Early reports indicate the sequel may go on floors in the second half of 2026, almost 17 years after the original release.
Released in 2009, 3 Idiots became a landmark Hindi film, blending campus comedy with a sharp critique of India's exam-driven education system. It broke box office records, entering the 200-crore club in India with domestic collections of over ₹202 crore and a worldwide gross exceeding 60 million dollars, making it the highest-grossing Bollywood film of its time. The film's message about following one's passion over parental and societal pressure resonated with students and families across generations.
For fans, the confirmed 3 Idiots sequel promises not just nostalgia but a fresh look at how Rancho, Farhan and Raju navigate mid-life, success and regret, again through humour and heart. If Hirani and his cast can match the honesty and energy of the original, the 3 Idiots sequel could become one of the most closely watched Hindi releases of this decade.
