The incident took place between around 10.30 pm on August 24 and 4 am on August 25 after an argument when the deceased, Mahesh Bhagwat Gaikwad had allegedly returned home drunk and insisted that his family should prepare mutton curry for dinner.

Police have arrested Mahesh's father, Bhagwat Suryabhan Gaikwad, 64, for allegedly assaulting him, while his mother, Parvati Bhagwat Gaikwad, 60, has also been arrested on allegations of attempting to destroy evidence.

According to police, Mahesh had been living alone after separating from his wife. He had been married around a decade ago and had two children. Police said his wife had earlier left him and moved to her parents' home with the children mentioning his alleged alcohol addiction and lack of regular employment. The couple had reportedly divorced recently.

Mahesh would frequently visit his parents' home for meals. His alleged drinking habit and repeated return home in an intoxicated state had led to frequent arguments with his father, police said.

During Shravan, the family was not preparing non-vegetarian food. Police said Mahesh would nevertheless demand meat after drinking which resulted in previous disagreements as well.

On the night of August 24, Mahesh had allegedly arrived at home after consuming alcohol and insisted that mutton curry should be prepared. When his family told him that non-vegetarian food was not being cooked during Shravan, he reportedly continued to demand it.

The argument escalated into a physical confrontation. Bhagwat allegedly assaulted Mahesh repeatedly, striking him on the head and face, police said.

Mahesh subsequently died from the injuries which he sustained in the assault.

Police said Parvati was aware that her son had died after the assault but allegedly did not inform others about the incident. Investigators have also claims that she attempted to destroy evidence from the scene to protect her husband.

The Warje-Malwadi police have arrested both the parents and are conducting further investigation.
