A 36-year-old chartered accountant from Katraj has become a victim of cyber fraud, losing ₹46.75 lakh over several months while trying to buy a newly released premium smartphone at a discounted price.

According to the police, the incident started when the victim encountered an online advertisement on social media promoting the device at a lower price. After expressing interest, he was contacted by individuals who claimed they could assist in purchasing the phone at a reduced cost.

By gaining his trust, the fraudsters initially requested a payment to confirm the order. As time passed, they continued to solicit additional funds under various pretenses, including shipping fees, taxes, and other processing charges. The victim kept transferring money to several bank accounts provided by the perpetrators, convinced that the phone would be delivered shortly.

It was only in December, after numerous requests for further payments without any delivery, that the victim realized he had been scammed. He then approached the police and filed a complaint.

Authorities have opened a case and commenced an investigation to track down the perpetrators and the financial trail. The police have once again advised citizens to be vigilant when making online purchases, particularly when offers seem excessively appealing.
