Google Automatic Backup delivers powerful relief for phone storage woes

Pune Times Mirror 2 weeks ago

Google Automatic Backup is shaping up to be the company's next big push to ease phone storage headaches on Android devices. The in-development feature was recently spotted inside a beta version of Google Play Services, buried in the settings for Quick Share.

Code sleuths at Android Authority found references to Google Automatic Backup in Google Play Services v26.15.31 beta, suggesting phones could automatically copy files straight to a PC over a local connection. Instead of relying on cloud storage, Google Automatic Backup appears to move photos, videos and audio files to a computer on the same network, keeping a local copy that lives outside the phone.

Early text strings describe the option inside Quick Share with the line "Backup your photos with devices in your household," hinting at a home-focused setup where laptops or desktops act as backup hubs. Because it sits inside Quick Share, the system is expected to use Google's existing device-to-device transfer tech, which can work without an active internet connection.

Leaked settings suggest Google will let users decide exactly what to sync, with separate controls for camera photos, camera videos and audio recordings. There also appears to be a main toggle to switch Google Automatic Backup on or off, plus a "Back up now" button for people who prefer to trigger transfers manually rather than wait for automatic sync.

Importantly, deleting items from the phone is not expected to erase them from the PC, allowing users to clear space while keeping a secondary copy safely stored. As with other Quick Share features, both devices will likely need to be signed in to the same Google account for Google Automatic Backup to function correctly.

For now, Google Automatic Backup remains hidden behind an APK teardown, so Google could change details, delay rollout or even drop the feature entirely before it reaches users. If it does ship, Google Automatic Backup would sit alongside existing Google Drive and Google Photos options, offering Android owners a more private, PC-centric way to manage crowded phone storage without leaning solely on the cloud.
